In a significant achievement for peace advocacy, the Palestinian movement Women of the Sun and the Israeli movement Women Wage Peace were honored with the prestigious Günter Wallraff Prize for Press Freedom and Human Rights in Germany this week. Singers Yael Deckelbaum and Mira Elabouni proudly accepted the award on behalf of both movements.
The jury of the Forum for Criticism of Journalism recognized the groundbreaking cooperation between the two organizations as an innovative approach to peacebuilding, intercultural understanding, and the promotion of human rights. The joint efforts of Palestinian and Israeli women, which have been a hallmark of both movements since their founding, were praised for creating bridges between nations and seeking common ground through The #MothersCall initiative.
In their heartfelt acceptance speech, Yael and Mira shared, “We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the opportunity to voice our message in such a respectable venue. During these difficult times, we are fighting against despair and carrying the torch of hope for a better future for us, our children, and future generations. Your support gives us the strength to continue our challenging journey, especially now.”
This recognition strengthens the resolve of both movements as they continue their shared path toward peace and justice in the region.
