In a significant milestone for peace advocacy, the Palestinian movement Women of the Sun and the Israeli movement Women Wage Peace have been honored with the prestigious Günter Wallraff Prize for Press Freedom and Human Rights in Germany. This week, singers Yael Deckelbaum and Mira Elabouni proudly accepted the award on behalf of both movements.
The jury of the Forum for Criticism of Journalism commended the groundbreaking partnership between the two organizations, recognizing it as an innovative approach to peacebuilding, intercultural understanding, and the promotion of human rights. The collaboration of Palestinian and Israeli women, central to both movements since their inception, was celebrated for its role in building bridges between communities and fostering unity through initiatives like The #MothersCall.
In their moving acceptance speech, Yael and Mira expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying:
“We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the opportunity to voice our message in such a respectable venue. During these difficult times, we are fighting against despair and carrying the torch of hope for a better future for us, our children, and future generations. Your support gives us the strength to continue our challenging journey, especially now.”
This recognition bolsters the resolve of both movements as they continue their shared mission to advance peace, justice, and coexistence in the region. Together, they remain steadfast in their pursuit of a brighter future for all.
