Women of the Sun and Women Wage Peace were honored to be among the three finalists for the prestigious Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, awarded annually by the European Parliament to individuals and groups dedicated to human rights and fundamental freedoms. This recognition underscores our unwavering commitment to fostering peace and reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians.

In December 2024, as finalists, we were invited to participate in a series of events at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, providing a platform to share our mission and initiatives with a broader international audience. A highlight of our visit was the Sakharov Roundtable: Peace is Possible – The Call of Palestinian and Israeli Society, held on December 17, 2024. This event, co-hosted by Members of the European Parliament Chloé Ridel, Thijs Reuten (S&D), Sophie Wilmès, and Hilde Vautmans (Renew), brought together peace activists and policymakers to discuss grassroots peacebuilding efforts in the region.
Representing our movements, Reem Alhajajra of Women of the Sun and Pascale Chen of Women Wage Peace, shared insights into our collaborative initiatives, emphasizing the transformative role of women and mothers in advocating for a negotiated, lasting peace. Their testimonies highlighted the power of unity and non-violent action in challenging times.

The roundtable also featured moving contributions from peace advocates, including Rabbi Nava Hefetz, Huda Abu Arqoub, Maoz Inon, and Aziz Abu Sarah. Each shared deeply personal stories of loss and resilience, emphasizing the critical role of civil society and grassroots leadership in advancing reconciliation and coexistence. Their experiences served as a testament to the strength of individuals who, despite profound personal tragedies, dedicate themselves to building a better future.
Our participation in these events at the European Parliament not only amplified our message but also strengthened our resolve to continue our joint efforts toward peace and mutual understanding. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the European Parliament, Hannah Assouline, and all the organizers for recognizing our work and providing this invaluable platform.
Together, we remain steadfast in our commitment to building bridges between our communities, striving for a future where peace and coexistence are not just aspirations but realities.
